The Canadian Molkky Club originated in April 2020 .
It was the early days of “Covid 19 LockDown“ when people were looking for different outdoor activities. I stumbled across this game that originated in Finland, throw a small log at a group of wooden pegs that resemble bowling pins numbered 1-12, First one to 50 wins !
Tactic Games has two sets that they sell, The Cardboard Box Set, this is a junior set that retails for about $60.00 Canadian.( The Canadian Molkky Club does NOT sell this Set)
This was the first set I bought not knowing that it was the smaller size. I introduced this game to my friends and we quickly fell in love playing the game. It took about a week for the first player to score what we refer to as “50 in 5” which means that you won the game ( got to 50 points exactly) in the fewest shots possible ( which is 5) this is really a Molkky achievement of excellence.
About one month into playing we formed the “Canadian Molkky Club” the first Association in Canada, ( check out Molkky World) and see all the Association’s in France. It was also at this time that I realized we were playing with a set designed for children, So glad that the Adults in Finland didn’t see us making this mistake.
It was time to buy an official tournament set.
The “Official “Delux” Tournament Set” by Tactic Games is the Wooden Crate Set ,with rope handles and the word “ Molkky” stamped on the crate. The Canadian Molkky Club sells this Set, plus added extras for $100.00 cdn.
This Set can be found on Amazon for similar price, but will only be the crate, 12 pegs and throwing stick.
Official games of Molkky are also played with a “Trapazoid” shaped throwing boundary called a “Molkkaari” Your feet , wheelchair must be behind this boundary line when throwing . It really limits how far right or left you can be while throwing Unfortunately Tactic Games does not currently include this piece of equipment in the basic delux set. They have to be purchased separately and are not available for purchase in North America, so the Canadian Molkky Club produced this device and we refer to it as the (Throwing Boundary) We include this with every set sold
Also an official game starts with the 12 pegs being exactly 11 feet 6 inches from the throwing boundary , a pain to brings tape measure, so We include a 11 foot 6 inch piece of rope with every set sold. This really didn’t cost us much, but it’s really convenient to have.If you actually play in same spot it’s a good idea to just put two nails 11 feet six inches apart in the ground and no need to measure again.
Tactic games has a “Molkky” App for scoring, it’s much better then using the blank pages in the book ( provided with set) , but is a pain for the one person scoring because players are always asking for their score and scorekeeper constantly has to remind players of the shooting order, So to resolve this we went old school and bought a twenty dollar white board ( chalkboard will also work) hang it from a nearby tree or fence and every player can see their score, other players scores and the order of when everybody shoots. I truly believe this is the absolute best way to score.
This game can be played by anybody, won by anybody, lost by anybody, even the best players will strike out. We enjoy poking fun at players when they throw badly and also love praising excellent shots. Even when your not winning you can take great enjoyment preventing other players ( best friends, partners, parents etc..) from winning, and there’s not a better feeling then seeing a good player at 46 points, trying to knock down the number 4 peg to win, missing that shot and accidentally knocking down the number 5 peg, putting their score to 51, which is over 50 and has their score dropped to 25 as the penalty for going over 50
Grab your friends, family, co-workers.
Go and find a good backyard, park, cottage
Bring your good lawn chair, cooler.snacks, drinks
Play individual games, Team games
Don’t be surprised by how many people will stop and ask you what the game is, and you will say “Molkky” it’s from Finland.
Enjoy
